Choose a Career Path

Reflect on the careers you explored in this toolkit. Choose an allied healthcare career you’re interested in pursuing:

What is it about this career that interests you?  What skills do you already have that will make you successful in this career path?
What skills do you still need to develop? How will you work on these skills?
What questions do you still have about pursuing this career?
Who in your life can you talk to about your next steps?  Who do you consider a mentor in your life? Who can help keep you accountable? What new connections do you want to make with people to learn more?
Choose your College Path
Choose your College Path

Set a goal for where you would like to be in one year. If you are a High School senior, where do you want to be in 6-12 months after you graduate? If you have already graduated from high school, what are your goals in the next 12 months? If you are in high schools, grades 9-11, what do you want to learn in the next year that will prepare you? Creating a goal that is ambitious yet realistic can take some time. You need to consider what resources are available to you. The most successful goals are realistic. They are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Timely (SMART). Here is some advice on how to create a S.M.A.R.T goal:

Map Out Your Steps

Now that you’ve set your goal, map out the steps you will take from now (or the point you plan to start) to about one year later.

  • Include 3-5 steps you will take to reach your goal. Examples of steps could be: research a particular training program or college major, attend an Information session at a particular training program or college, take a free online course in a particular career focused area, find out how to earn a certification now, research summer internships in your area of interest, attend a meet-up, etc.
  • Describe each step with as much specific detail as possible
  • Write down when you intend to take this step (try to pinpoint the month or day)
  • How will you avoid procrastinating or missing deadlines? Rank each step as Low, Medium or High in terms of the time it will take. For example, a Low Time step is to do research about a program, a High Time step is to take an online course.
